Updates from Mrs. Allen:
Writing: The sixth grade is continuing to work on our formative essay. This week we will be completing the introduction, thesis statement and will begin building our essay's body.
Grammar: The sixth grade is continuing on with our study of prepositions. Last week they started learning about compounds. This week we will be learning about compound verbs to go along with our compound subjects and compound objects of the preposition. Additionally, we will be learning about imperative sentences and the differences between adverbs and prepositions. This will take us shortly to our review of prepositions and then we will have a test in the next few weeks.
Vocabulary: We are beginning our third week's list of vocabulary words. The children are learning the definitions, parts of speech and pronunciation of each of these new vocabulary words. At the end of each week they are asked to use these words in a narrative story.
ELA Bellringers: Bellringers is the morning seat work. This seat work has a different prompt each day. On Monday's the children learn a new Greek/Latin Root or Affix. They are asked to use it in a sentence of their choosing and they illustrate it. On Tuesday, they make as many inferences as they can off the "Picture of the Week." Wednesday is is the day that they correct a poorly written sentence in order to make it grammatically correct. Thursday morning, they work on the the "Word of the Week." During this exercise they learn the definition, pronunciation and part of the speech. Next, they use it in a sentence of their choosing and then they illustrate it. Friday is the "Quote of the Week." They read a quote and tell me in two to three sentences what they believe the quote means. Once they have interpreted the quote, they illustrate it in their composition books.
